6 Things to Do Your First Time in Santorini

With its blue-domed, white-walled houses built on the cliffs overlooking the Aegean sea, the Greek island of Santorini is known as one of the most beautiful destinations. On your first trip to Santorini, make sure you take advantage of all this picturesque spot has to offer.

1. Walk the caldera edge

Thousands of years ago when the volcano erupted, it shaped the caldera in Santorini. The stunning views from the caldera edge are likely to be one of the things that enticed you to visit Santorini. Pack some water and snacks, and set off on the three-hour walk from Fira to Oia. You will walk through the villages of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and finally Oia. There are a few different routes; if you need to stop at a market you should head into town, but otherwise, you should choose not to follow signs leading into town. You'll get the best views from the caldera edge.

2. Watch the sunset from Oia

The village of Oia is the best spot in Santorini to view the sunset. Santorini sunsets are considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world, so you will want to see it from picturesque Oia. The village is situated on the caldera cliffs, with classic white walls and blue-roofed churches. Watch the sun dip down over the caldera and the sparkling Aegean sea, and be prepared to share the view with many other people basking in the beauty of the Santorini sunset.

3. Swim at Kamari Beach or Red Beach, famous for their coloured sand

Kamari Beach has volcanic black sand and offers hundreds of umbrellas and sunbeds. The beach has a variety of water sports available, such as water skiing, surfing, paddleboats, and windsurfing, as well as a diving center if you want to take lessons. A beach volleyball area and a section of shops, cafes, and clubs make this beach an ideal stop for anyone interested in a day at the beach.

Red Beach is named for its red volcanic sand. This beach is more difficult to reach, as you will have to trek along a steep trail. Wear appropriate footwear for the walk. Snorkeling at this beach is highly recommended, with lots of interesting rocks that you will see.

4. Take a tour of the island

Just about any type of tour you can imagine is offered on Santorini. A sunset sailing tour with a buffet and drinks, an archaeological tour of ancient Akrotiri, a helicopter flight over the island, or a culinary tour complete with cooking class are all popular options for visitors to Santorini. Make time for a tour that piques your interest, as you'll learn a lot about the island. Your tour guide may even have a few secrets to share with you.

5. Go wine tasting

Santorini wine is unique due to the climate and the mineral content of the volcanic soil. Assyrtiko is the type of grape used in most of the white wines made on Santorini. These grapes are dried in the sun to make Vinsanto, a strong, sweet wine. Nykteri is made from grapes picked at night in order to avoid oxidation. Try these popular varieties on a wine tasting tour of Santorini and see which is your favourite.

6. Visit the volcano

A tour of the volcano involves a boat excursion and a walk up to the active craters. At the top you will be able to smell the sulfur and see the smoke from the volcano, as well as admire the views of the islands. A dip in the thermal pools might interest you, but be warned that the water may stain your swimsuit red, and the water from the hot springs mixes with seawater, resulting in a lukewarm experience instead.

This Greek island has so much more to offer than the often-photographed village of Oia, so be sure to check out these other incredible attractions on your first trip to Santorini.
