First Time Pregnancy - Tips For You and Your Baby to Stay Healthy!

First-time pregnancy is often the most intimidating or the most delightful time in a woman's life. The wonder of bringing a new life that is growing inside you can invoke the most intense of emotions. Apart from the delight in anticipation of having your child, being pregnant for the first time is likely to make you confused and anxious about managing yourself. Some say a mother should take the diet of two people because she needs to take care of one more life. But is it true, if yes what they should eat & if not how the baby will get a proper diet to grow as a healthy child. When you will consult with a doctor they will say a pregnant mother must take a balanced diet. Know that you should call your doctor at the slightest feeling of unusual discomfort or any health concern. Following tips will help you and your baby stay healthy.

Care during First Time Pregnancy

1. Diet: The baby inside depends on you for proper nutrition. So, if you will take healthy & balanced diet your child will become healthy. Below are few points to be taken care of
 As it has been strictly prescribed by doctors that intake of Vitamin A must be controlled because it may cause damage to embryo.

  • All long green vegetables should be used alternately. You must keep balance, rather than eating same vegetable all the time.
  • Reduce brinjal, papaya, celery, onion, chilli, garlic, ginger, pepper, asafoetida, mustard, carom seeds, jaggery from your diet.
  • Black grapes, banana, ripe mango, dates, cashew nuts, apricot are very beneficial.
  • Items such as sandwich, bakery bread, bun, dhokla, pizza, pancake, steamed rice cake, curd, tomato, tamarind usually increase the swellings and acidity. So, try to avoid such item but if such problems do not exist, you can take in small quantity.
  • Do not eat left over, frozen & deep-frozen food, cold drinks, mutton, cocoa, chicken, eggs, alcohol, smoking, tobacco, betel nut, pan-masala but tea, coffee & ice-creams can be taken in small quantity.

2Take a lot of rest – Rest all you can during pregnancy because life will most probably change upside down after that. Pace yourself. Take a 10-minute break as often as you can. Take a nap before dinner. Take a nap around lunch time. Go to sleep early and rise as late as you can get away with. Get in the habit of grabbing bits of rest whenever you can-this will make parenting a newborn much easier! Moreover, your body needs the rest as it is undergoing drastic changes. Resting would ensure the optimal health of you and your baby.

      3. Stay Confident - Stay confident in your body! Look for positive information about birth and pregnancy. Avoid the birth horror stories people want to tell. Your body knows how to birth. Don't let anyone try to tell you it will fail. If someone wants to tell you about her horrible birth, invite her to share it with you after you have had your baby. If someone has advice about what you absolutely have to do, take it with a grain of salt. There is no one best way to give birth for every woman. You can find your best way, and you will have an easier time doing so if you hear about positive experiences.

    4.Ask Questions... But Don’t go overboard
      with too much information
      Ask questions about your Health. Whenever a test or procedure is recommended (such as ultrasound, blood test, amino, etc.) you have a right, even a responsibility,to ask questions. What? Why? How and When? Study the basics of being healthy during pregnancy but that is it. There is a whole range of information on the signs and symptoms that you should take seriously and call your doctor. Although it is important to be as cautious as you can, but guard against becoming paranoid. After all, this time is a celebration of womanhood and you are supposed to enjoy it.

   5.Nausea and morning sickness – Nausea or vomiting may strike anytime during the day (or night). Try eating frequent, small meals and avoid greasy foods. Keep crackers by your bed to eat before getting up. Talk to your doctor if morning sickness lasts past the first 3 months of pregnancy or causes you to lose weight...

66.Keep Your Self Hydrated - Keep yourself hydrated. Plain water is great. If you are nauseated and can't keep water down, add a spoonful of sugar and a pinch of salt to it. This will rehydrate you quickly and ease much of your nausea.

  7.Prenatal Yoga – You can either join a Yoga class or read a few books on the yoga stretches that make you feel more comfortable. The former has the advantage of meeting new moms-to-be, while reading Yoga books and performing the exercises at home can relieve you from the possible exertion of going out. Practicing Yoga gives you great benefits of managing stress and the breath control prepares you better for labour.

   Along with this Visit Your Doctor regularly to keep yourself updated on  the health of you and your baby. Apart from usual Visit, Call Your Doc Immediately If You have:

* Blood or fluid coming from your vagina
* Sudden or extreme swelling of your face or fingers
* Headaches, Nausea and vomiting that stays long
* Dizziness
* Dim or blurry vision
* Pain or cramps in your lower abdomen
* Chills or fever
* A change in your baby's movements
* Less urine or burning when you urinate

Warnings: "Don't do this, don't do that." You've probably heard every old wives' tale. Here are some warnings worth heeding:

* Don't smoke. Smoking raises your risk for miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and many other problems.
* Don't use drugs. Cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs increase your risk of miscarriage, premature birth and birth defects. Your baby could also be born addicted to the drug you've been abusing, which can cause serious health problems.
* Don't drink alcohol. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is the major cause of preventable birth defects, including fatal alcohol syndrome.
* Don't clean your cat's litter box or eat raw or undercooked red meat. You could get toxoplasmosis, a disease that can cause birth defects.
* Don't sit in a sauna or hot tub. The high heat raises your risk of miscarriage and birth defects.

If you follow the tips given above, it should help you to cope with first time pregnancy without too many anxious moments.

  2.  Hi genebernice,
    Thanks for your query! There are few reasons why women get heartburn during pregnancy, even though if you have not got that earlier.Main reason is due to hormone -

    progesterone, which relaxes the valve at the top of your stomach, causing a small amount of stomach acid, sometimes with partially digested food, to surge upwards into your esophagus.

    Below are few point that would help you to avoid Heartburn:
    1.Eating small meals more frequently will prevent your stomach becoming overfull and pushing up under your diaphragm.
    2.Try to eat your main meal of the day at lunchtime if at all possible and eat your evening meal early in the evening, so that your body has time to digest it before you go to

    bed.
    3.Do not drink liquids with your food as this causes your digestive juices to become diluted and therefore less effective, but do drink between meals.
    4.Ginger or chamomile tea can be useful
    5.Avoid Chocolate, spicy, rich,citrus fruits and juices,mustard, vinegar, mint products, fatty and fried foods
    6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You need to avoid any tightness around your waist and stomach.
    7. Bend at the knees instead of at the waist. Bending at the waist puts more pressure on your stomach.
