4 Great Tips For Organizing Your New Home

Moving into a new home has its fair share of excitement for every member of the family. Given the fact that there were stressful days of packing up the old house, moving into the new has brought with it a sense of new life and a fresh start. However, the biggest dilemma that most families face when standing united in their new living room is the one of how to unpack. It took long enough to stash everything away in cardboard boxes with packing peanuts, but now it's time to work in reverse after only a couple hours of transportation. But don’t despair. I would say my biggest secret to moving homes is to just take a deep breath and get started! And while you're at it, here are 4 great tips for organizing your new home:

1) The first and biggest secret to organizing your home is to have a plan for what you are going to do first. Don't allow your eager side to pull out the sauce pans for hanging on the kitchen hooks, grandma's antique flower vase for the dining table, and the books for the new library all at once. Take it step by step. Unless other members of the family are there to lend extra hands, start with one area of the house at a time. Of course, if others in the family are eager to help then splitting up areas of the house for each to unpack and organize will quicken the process.
The best place to start unpacking and organizing in is usually the kitchen. It is, after all, one of the most important rooms in the house. Once the kitchen is set with food and drink easily available, it's a lot easier to move on the rest of the house. After all, you don't want to finish organizing and unpacking in the bedrooms, living room, bathrooms, and dining room only to be hungry and thirsty while having to sort through boxes and bags just to get a glass of water and prepare a sandwich.

2) keep the things that you use the most often easily within reach. Place the utensils that you use the most often in a jar beside the cooking range or on hooks on the wall, and the others in the draw. Keep the shoes that you use the most often on the top shelves, and the others on lower shelves. This works especially well for arranging shoes and clothing, because if you are ever in a hurry to grab something to wear and run out the door, you won't have to worry about pulling everything out just to find that one favorite piece. Be seasonal with your clothing and shoes. When it's summer, keep your heeled wedges and ballerina flats on the top self, and the snow boots on the lower shelf. It works the same with clothing. And of course, you can reverse their dwelling places once the seasons change so that it's more practical to reach.

3) Moving to a new home is a great start for helping family members builds new habits of tidiness and organization. Make an obvious place for everything and encourage others in the family to keep it that way. There should always be standard hooks for house and driving keys, a standard place for hanging your coats when coming indoors, a designated plug-point with a tray near it for charging phones, and a pin board for keeping track of the bills. Reports that were done by the National Association of Professional Organizers said that 25% of adults say that the bill got lost in their house and hence was paid late.

4) Downsize what you don't really need. Back to the above research, it was found that 80% of the “stuff” that we keep in our homes, we don't actually use, and 20% of the clothes that we hang in the cupboard, we don't wear. Moving to a new home is also an opportunity to go through all your belongings and see what you don't actually need. Organising your home is much easier when there is less “stuff”. Sort through the kitchen linens and throw out ones that are worn out, moldy, or extremely grease stained. The same goes for bathroom hand towels and face towels. A nice idea if you don't have a lot of cupboard space in your new bathrooms, would also be to place a wooden tray for beside the sink and roll up the smaller towels in a decorative way—pleasing to the eyes and practical for your hands! Go through your clothing and shoes as well and give away whatever is out of fashion, doesn't fit, is slightly faded, or that you haven't worn for ages. There are, of course, other DIY projects for certain cloth throw-away items. But be careful that you don't build up clutter without any future plan for it.

  1. Great tips! What's difficult about organizing the home is not starting with a specific and clear plan. There has to be a plan and there has to be a goal as well as a deadline. It's also crucial to downsize the things you own or you'll be bombarded with so much stuff as I used to be at my apartments Dallas TX.
