5 Things Everyone Should Know on How to Maintain Your Vehicle

Whether you're 16 with a brand new driver's license or 45 with lots of mileage under your belt, driving is fun. There are road trips, playing your music loud with the windows rolled down, and the freedom that you feel behind the wheel—but there's a darker side to car ownership as well. You have to worry about filling up your tank, checking the oil, and changing flat tires, so it's imperative that you have some general maintenance skills.

Checking Pressure and Changing Tyres

Tyre care is one of the most important aspects of car maintenance. If you notice one of your tires looking a little low, having a pressure gauge is incredibly helpful. You'll know whether you can get away with refilling the tire or if it needs changed. If you need to replace more than one, you can always drive to Reedman Toll Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram to get it done professionally, but that's not always possible. If you get a flat in your driveway or on the road, rely on your own know-how.

Switching Out the Windshield Wipers

People don't think about their windshield wipers until they start making that awful screeching noise because the blades are dull. Lots of drivers just put up with it until they get something else fixed, but why subject yourself to such auditory horrors? Besides, there are also times when your wipers might somehow get loose or stuck, especially in winter. Learn how to swap them out, because you never want to mess with your visibility on the road.

Knowing How to Add and Change Fluids

Your car needs various fluids, and it's neither safe nor practical to neglect them. You might think you can do without windshield wiper fluid, for instance, until thousands of bugs commit kamikaze on your windshield. Remember, don't mess with your visibility. Similarly, you have to pay attention to brake fluid, transmission fluid, and the coolant for your engine. Even if you have to ask your local mechanic for a lesson, figure out their respective check points and learn how to add or replace these fluids yourself. It's not hard; after the first few times, you'll feel like a pro.

Gauging and Changing the Oil

Changing the oil deserves its own mention because you can really mess up your vehicle if you don't change the oil regularly. Keep up-to-date with each oil change you receive and change it yourself if you have to do it. Some people prefer to get their oil professionally serviced, and with some cars that's the more practical option. If changing the oil is easy in your car, however, familiarize yourself with checking the dipstick and get to it.

Jumping the Battery

Battery maintenance is also crucial. Know your way around your battery so you can easily spot corrosion or loose caps. Besides that, you never know when you or someone else might need a jump. Get yourself some reliable jumper cables and take a lesson in how to properly, safely jump a battery. You never know when this skill will come in handy.

Driving and car ownership are privileges, so earn them by learning. What do you consider the most important maintenance skill?
